ABOUT ICELAND – Iceland is an island nation in the northern Atlantic Ocean between Greenland, Norway, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the Faroe Islands, just south of the Artic Circle. Iceland is a volcanic island and approximately 10 percent of the island is glaciated with the coastline having numerous fjords.  Most towns in Iceland are situated in on or near the coastline as the interior of the islands is cold and virtually uninhabitable. The major cities and towns are the capital Reykjavik, where the country’s international airport is located, and Akureyri. Iceland has several national parks. Iceland is wealthy country and has one of the highest literacy rates in the world. One of the most popular activities in Iceland for both locals and tourists alike is visiting the geothermal spas and pools that can be found all around the country.   The capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, is the country’s largest city and the world’s northernmost capital. Reykjavik is frequently referred to as the “nightlife capital of the north.”
